I have great pleasure in reporting that Lee Bowen, our club’s ever- enthusiastic and industrious development officer, has received the prestigious Wiltshire Sports ‘Volunteer Of The Year’ Award for 2017.
Last Friday (26th January)- Lee joined a host of worthy nominees and sports personalities for this special sports awards presentation evening at Devizes’ stately Corn Hall.
From a golden envelope, in front of a hushed audience of 200, Snooker’s chipper Irish ex-world champion, Dennis Taylor, pulled out the winner’s name: Lee Bowen.
I’m sure it’s a result warmly welcomed by all within the widening Table Tennis fraternity as Lee’s efforts to promote our sport have been unstinting and exemplary. He continues to be a positive driving force at Sanford Link Table Tennis Club and an influential figure within the Swindon Table Tennis League and Wiltshire Table Tennis Association. Additionally, he works within numerous local schools and community groups, introducing our sport to scores of new participants.
Having potted the ‘Volunteer Of The Year’, Lee commented to a reporter from the ‘Swindon Advertiser’, “I am really over the moon to have won… but this is recognition for all volunteers in all sports.” Aptly put. Only last week, buoyed by the success of previous inter-school tournaments, Lee launched his latest initiative: an Inter-School Table Tennis League; it’ll be much appreciated by children, parents and teachers alike, I’m sure.
Lastly, if you’ve yet to meet Lee (and other Sanford Link Table Tennis Club members, of course) and would like to learn/improve at Table Tennis- get your kit packed, grab your bat (optional) and join us for a practice at Swindon Academy one Friday soon. You’ll be made most welcome.
Age is immaterial as Table Tennis is a sport for life… as proven by Lee himself.
He’s been playing for 60 years. Long may he continue.
